Kids Sports Modeling: Tips, Props, and Outfit Ideas

Serious tween girl in athletic wear with basketball indoors

Kids sports modeling is a growing niche that blends athletic energy with commercial appeal. Recently, my daughter and I did an indoor sports shoot for her portfolio and also to commemorate her time playing basketball. Since we live in Central FL and our Summers are brutal, we opted for an indoor studio with great lighting and kept the shoot really classic and simple. I absolutely love how her photos came out and wanted to share some tips and tricks that helped us prepare for the shoot!

Whether your child is into soccer, dance, tennis, or just loves a good athleisure look, taking sports photos or using them to build a portfolio (us!) with a sporty twist can help your kids stand out amongst the rest. Here’s how to create a scroll-stopping sports modeling shoot for your child—complete with outfits, angles, props, and location inspiration.

What Props to Bring for Kids Sports Portraits

Props help tell a story and highlight your child’s active lifestyle. Keep them age-appropriate and authentic to the sport or vibe you want to capture.

  • Basketball, soccer ball, tennis racketBuy here
  • Yoga mat, resistance bands, water bottleBuy here
  • Duffle bag or gym toteShop sporty bags
  • Headphones or sports watch – adds a modern, older-kid look

Choose 1–2 props per look to keep the setup clean and professional.

Best Angles to Take

Angles make a huge difference in capturing movement:

  • Low angles to emphasize power and motion (e.g., jumping, running)
  • Side profiles to show form during action poses
  • Candid, over-the-shoulder shots to capture interaction with props or scenery
  • High angles for a playful or editorial feel

Pro tip: Burst mode is great for capturing jumping, running, or spinning mid-action.

Outfit Ideas: Athleisure Favorites

Style matters, and clean, trendy athleisure looks go a long way. Try these brand suggestions:

  • Hollister: Sporty crop tops, joggers, and performance shorts
  • Abercrombie: Track sets, windbreakers, and court-ready sneakers
  • Lululemon: High-quality tanks, leggings, and youth activewear
  • Shop Hollister, Abercrombie Kids, Lululemon Kids

Stick to neutral tones or color blocking. Avoid logos unless you’re shooting for that brand.

Indoor Photo Options for Kids Sports Modeling

Don’t let the weather stop the shoot:

  • Gymnasiums or basketball courts
  • Home garage with sports gear setup
  • Fitness studios with open space
  • Dance or yoga studio for floor work and poses

Indoor lighting should be soft and even—use a ring light or bounce natural light with a white foam board.

Outdoor Photo Options for Kids Sports Modeling

Outdoor shoots provide depth and natural energy:

  • Local park or soccer field
  • Basketball court with chain nets
  • Urban backdrops like skate parks or graffiti walls
  • Beach runs, boardwalk stretches, or nature trails

Shoot during golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) for the best natural lighting.

Keep It Fun

The best photos come when kids are relaxed and having fun. Play music, encourage movement, and let their personality shine through in the action shots of the sports they truly love.

Whether you’re building a portfolio and submitting to agencies or just want to cherish these sweet memories of your child during this era, sports modeling and photography captures the essence of kids and helps bring out real joy. Prepare with the right props, pick the perfect outfits, and aim for expressive movement—and you’ll have a standout set in no time!
